The care you should take with a tattoo is important to ensure that your skin heals properly and that the tattoo stays beautiful and healthy. Here are some tips:
- Keep the tattoo clean and dry: It’s important to keep the tattooed area clean and dry. Use a pH neutral or glycerin soap and lukewarm water to gently wash the tattoo. Then carefully dry it with a paper towel. Avoid using bath towels as they can leave fibers or small particles on your skin, which can cause irritation. I always recommend washing the tattoo three times a day during the first three weeks after getting it
- Apply healing cream: After cleaning and drying the tattoo, apply a very thin layer of the healing cream recommended by your tattoo artist.
- Don’t scratch the tattoo: It may be hard to resist the itching that occurs during healing, but try to avoid scratching, as it can damage the skin and hinder the tattoo’s healing process.
- Protect the tattoo from the sun: Not only in the first few weeks after getting it, but always avoid exposing the tattoo to the sun, as it can damage the skin and cause the tattoo to fade. Once it has healed, always use sunscreen with SPF 50+.
- Avoid going to the beach, pools, rivers, and saunas: As we know, the sun isn’t helpful for healing, and saltwater is also harmful, so don’t swim in the sea with a fresh tattoo. Saltwater not only contains many bacteria but is also salty, which increases skin irritation and pain. These factors can lead to infections and harm your health. Also, be cautious of sand or anything that might come into contact with the tattooed area, especially during the first two weeks. This includes avoiding rivers, pools, saunas, and hot tubs as well.
- Wear loose and breathable clothing: Tight clothing made from non-breathable materials can irritate the skin and prevent proper healing. Choose loose, breathable clothing that allows your skin to breathe. Avoid polar or fuzzy pajamas, as their fibers can stick to the tattoo and cause more irritation.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help keep your skin hydrated and healthy.
- Avoid physical activity: Especially during the first two weeks, avoid any kind of sport. Your skin is elastic and will adapt to your movements and muscle stretching, which can deform the tattoo. Also, avoid excessive sweating, as it can carry bacteria and increase the risk of infection.
- Avoid contact with pets: We all love our pets, but when it comes to an open wound, it’s best to keep them away from it. Be mindful of fur left on furniture, such as sofas and beds.
Always remember to follow the specific instructions provided by your tattoo artist regarding care, as each tattoo may have different needs. If you notice any redness, swelling, or irritation in the tattooed area, contact your tattoo artist immediately—they will know how to advise you on better care.
